Anti-Anxiety Medicine

The benefits of cannabis for anxiety.

Cannabis and Anxiety

Cannabis has shown to bear many gifts for people who suffer from a variety of ailments.

Studies suggest that cannabis also contains anti-anxiety properties and benefits many people with issues related to anxiety disorders. Considering the number of Americans who could be positively impacted, this is big news.

What is Anxiety?

Everyone gets anxious from time to time. It’s part of the human condition. In fact, it has played a crucial part in our survival. When we are threatened or sense danger, these “fight or flight” chemicals are released naturally in our bodies that help us move quickly, without much thought. It helps us to quickly dodge a baseball speeding at our head without stopping to process what is going on.

Anxiety is stress that continues after the reason for the stress is no longer present. Even though the stressor is no longer present, the body continues to pump out three major stress hormones: adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine. As a result, the heart beats faster than necessary, blood pressure increases, muscles tense, breathing becomes more shallow and the pupils dilate.

Anxiety is part of a recognized group of disorders including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder and others. Healthcare researchers have noted that the condition goes largely underdiagnosed and untreated.

Anxiety affects approximately one-third of the population in their lifetime. More than 40 million Americans currently suffer from some kind of anxiety disorder. That’s 18% of the U.S. adult population, and many are currently on prescription pharmaceuticals.

Long-term patients typically treat their disorder with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Zoloft or Prozac. These SSRIs have side effects ranging from insomnia to lower sex drive to suicidal thoughts.

Doctors often prescribe benzodiazepines (Xanax is the most common) for short-term panic attacks or acute anxiety. Benzodiazepines are not without serious risk. They can cause disorientation and lethargy and can be addictive. Sadly, more than 1,000 Americans die of a benzodiazepine overdose each year. That number jumps to 8,000 a year when combined with opioid medication.1
