THC & CBD For Anxiety

How THC & CBD cannabinoids work.

CBD, THC and the Endocannabinoid System

Cannabis contains more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids, but CBD and THC get most of the attention. These two cannabinoids affect your mind and body in different ways, but both are essential to combatting anxiety.

THC is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that provides the euphoric or intoxicating “high” effect. THC has also been found to help the muscles relax.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound. No matter how much CBD you consume, you will not feel intoxicated or “high.” CBD has been found to have anti-anxiety properties. It also helps counter the psychoactive effect of THC. This is why the ratio of THC:CBD in cannabis flowers/buds or products matters.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) was first discovered in the 1960s. It is not exclusive to humans, but exists in all vertebrate animals. The ECS consists of a series of cell receptors that only accept cannabinoids, especially THC and CBD.

Think of these receptors like microscopic “locks” on the surface of your cells. The “keys” are molecules called agonists. In this case, the agonists are the cannabinoids THC and CBD. When an agonist binds to a cell, it relays a message, giving the cell specific direction.

Research suggests that cannabis that’s high in CBD and relatively low in THC provides the best combination for anxiety relief. The idea of taking fewer pharmaceutical drugs is an attractive proposition for many people. In states with legal cannabis, patients use significantly less prescription medication. Knowing that cannabis can be an affordable and safe option makes it worth a try.

A 2017 Canadian study discovered that 40% of patients who were prescribed cannabis to treat anxiety eliminated the use of benzodiazepines (like Xanax) within 90 days. That percentage increased to 45% after a year of cannabis treatment.

“We wanted to take a close look at the likelihood of continued benzodiazepine usage after commencing medical cannabis treatments, and to be perfectly honest, the results are extremely promising,” said Dr. Neil Smith, who conducted the study. “When conducting this type of research, experts are typically encouraged by an efficacy rate in the neighborhood of 10%. To see 45% effectiveness demonstrates that the medical cannabis industry is at a real watershed moment.”

Why Cannabis Works for PTSD?

Studies have shown that the endocannabinoid system is involved in memory extinction. For those who have had a traumatic experience, being able to shut out those bad memories helps minimize anxiety. Activating the endocannabinoid system by consuming cannabis has been shown to facilitate this process.

Scientists suggest that CBD holds promise as a treatment for PTSD, by helping the sufferer to eliminate memories that trigger panic attacks.
