CBD & THC For Nausea
The entourage effect of CBD & THC for nausea relief.
CBD, THC and the Endocannabinoid System
Cannabis contains more than 100 chemical compounds called cannabinoids, but CBD and THC get most of the attention. These two cannabinoids affect your mind and body in different ways, but both are essential to combatting nausea.
THC is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that provides the euphoric or intoxicating “high” effect. THC has also been found to be an antiemetic, which basically means that it is effective against vomiting and nausea. Ingesting THC soothes your stomach and minimizes nausea.
CBD is a non-psychoactive compound. No matter how much CBD you consume, you will not feel intoxicated or “high.” CBD has also been found to quell nauseous feelings and prevent vomiting. It also helps counter the psychoactive effect of THC.
Research suggests that there is a direct link between your body’s endocannabinoid and the areas of the brain that control nausea and vomiting. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) was first discovered in the 1960s and exists in all mammals. The ECS consists of a series of cell receptors that accept only cannabinoids, especially THC and CBD.
Think of these receptors like microscopic “locks” on the surface of your cells. The “keys” are molecules called agonists. In this case, the agonists are the cannabinoids THC and CBD. When an agonist binds to a cell, it relays a message, giving the cell-specific direction.
The “Entourage Effect”
Some believe that cannabis should not be reduced to single compounds like traditional Western medicine but should be consumed as a whole. World-renowned neurologist and cannabinoid researcher Dr. Ethan Russo has theorized that THC, CBD and all the other compounds found in cannabis work together. He refers to this as the “entourage effect,” meaning the compounds act in concert to create a synergistic effect.
